That night, Anne and Clarence huddled together in the corner of the room, discussing their plan. Nodding as she walked away, Anne broke away and found Richard, joking with Thomas Culpeper. The younger man was still finding his feet amongst the group, and the former King was ensuring Katherine didn’t monopolise his time.

“Richard, a word,” said Anne, placing her hand on his shoulder, and smiling an apology to Thomas. “I don’t really know how best to tell you this, but on Saturday night…”

“…they’re doing my play.” Richard finished her sentence. “You forget we are ghosts. I came in through the wall this evening, and heard you and my brother talking.”

Anne’s shoulders slumped.

“I’m so sorry, we didn’t mean to keep it from you. We were going to tell you this evening, and we only found out ourselves this afternoon. Are you alright with it?”

“What choice do I have? I can hardly protest about it, can I? I shouldn’t even be here! By rights I should be in Leicester!” He kicked his heels against the wall behind him, and then looked out of the nearby window. “I thought I would go.” He laughed at her expression. “You don’t look surprised?”

“Queen Jane suspected you might be tempted to watch, to see how they did it. Whether things had changed in recent years.”

“Will you come with me?”

“Of course, you know I will.” She reached out and took his hand. “I will be right there, by your side. After all, it is a Queen’s duty to support the King, even if he isn’t the one she was married to!” Suddenly blushing, Anne released her grip and made to hurry away, when Richard stopped her.

“You did support your King, you know, whatever anyone has ever said about you. You were a wonderful Queen, from what I saw.”

Anne nodded and smiled, but still broke free of his grasp, and hurried down the stairs. Richard made no attempt to stop her. He had meant what he said to her, whether he should have said it or not. He had already been at the Tower for over forty years when the living Anne had arrived on the scene, albeit initially as a companion to her sister Mary, when both the Boleyn girls had been in service to Henry’s first Queen, Katherine of Aragon. The two sisters had held the court in their sway for years, as one and then the other became Henry’s object of desire. Mary had been a beautiful girl, but Richard had to admit that he was one of many who had seen the attraction of Anne on her arrival and rise through court life.

He had been there before her coronation, although he had never admitted as much to her. He had watched the Tower come to life, glistening in cloth of gold and silver, sparkling with so many jewels, as the whole court came together to see the controversial Queen celebrate before receiving her crown and the church’s blessing.

And he had been there through her final days.
